LABELMATE Label Unwinders

Label Unwinders save time and labor by providing a convenient way to manage your supply roll of labels as it feeds into the printer. You can use larger rolls of labels to minimize your unit label cost. Also, the supply roll of labels does not have to be refreshed as often, adding convenience. Unwinders are particularly valuable in a production environment where maximum throughput is desired. As opposed to label rolls internal to the printer, external rolls are always visible, making it easy to monitor the status of your label supply.

How to Select a Label Unwinder
There are two categories of Label Unwinders: Powered and Non-powered. A powered Unwinder provides motorized assistance to feed labels into the printer. A Non-powered Unwinder is a less expensive, passive unit, that provides no unwind assistance. Non-powered Unwinders provide a small amount of resistance or back tension to keep the labels tidy as they go into the printer.

With non-powered Unwinders, the printer must physically pull the blank label stock off the roll and into the printer. Many printers are not strong enough to do this. Even if the printer is able to pull the labels into the printer, doing so may put significant stress on the printer, particularly with heavy label rolls. This may cause registration problems or lead to early failure of the printer’s label advance mechanism.

Any of LABELMATE’s Label Rewinders except the CAT-40G can also be used as an Unwinder. In that role, the Rewinder is “put into reverse” with a low torque setting to provide a small amount of back tension just as a Non-powered Unwinder does. Here the Rewinder is functioning exactly as an Nonpowered Unwinder, but with a greater degree of control over back tension.

Practically speaking, a Rewinder employed as an Unwinder cannot be used to assist the unwind process because there is no provision to increase or decrease as the printer starts and stops. For this you specifically need a Powered Unwinder.

A Powered Unwinder is always preferred over an Non-powered Unwinder. Incidentally, a Powered Unwinder can also be used as a Label Rewinder by temporarily blocking the Control Arm in the “ON” position.

Unless otherwise stated, Unwinders are not supplied standard with an Outer Label Flange because a roll to be unwound does not need an Outer Flange.

Part 1 - Powered Label Unwinders
LABELMATE UCAT-2 and UCAT-40 Powered Unwinders are specialized for the unwinding job. They track the printer label usage and unwind on demand to provide the most sophisticated control for the Unwind process.

When the printer takes in blank label stock, it lifts a Control Arm on the UCAT-2 or UCAT-40, signaling its demand for more labels. The Unwinder then advances label stock under power until there is sufficient stock that the Control Arm relaxes and stops the assisted unwinding. The Unwinder then waits until the printer once again signals its demand for more labels by lifting the Control Arm. The amount and speed of power assist can be conveniently adjusted with the TORQUE Control Knob.

The UCAT-40 and UCAT-2-CHUCK provide the most advanced unwinding solution available and are recommended for demanding production applications. These models have a “Quick-Chuck” Core Holder for the most convenient mounting and removal of label rolls and cores possible.

The “Ultimate Unwinder,” LABELMATE Model UCAT-40, handles large label rolls up to 16” (40-cm) diameter for maximum label economy. The included “Quick-Chuck” Core Holder makes for fast and easy loading and unloading of label rolls.
